Getting Started in The Severed Gods
Launch on Steam, pick a hero, and clear your first Low zone without throwing the run.
The Severed Gods entered Steam Early Access on August 10, 2026, developed by Topebox as a single-player turn-based roguelite built around Break, Defend, and Sever mechanics. This guide walks you from installation through your first meaningful run so you understand zones, heroes, skills, and relics before difficulty spikes in Mid and High areas.
Install the demo or full game
You can start with the free demo (Steam App ID 4396000) or purchase Early Access (App ID 3755930). Both share the same core combat loop; the full game unlocks additional worlds, meta progression in the Realm of Spirits, and the complete Early Access hero roster. Install through Steam, verify controller or keyboard preferences under Settings, and review the Keyboard & Mouse or Gamepad UI Tips pages if input feels unfamiliar.
Join the official Discord and follow @The_SeveredGods for patch alerts — balance changes to skills and relics land frequently during Early Access.
Understand the run structure
Each run sends one hero through a branching map divided into Low, Mid, and High zones. Read Vertical Zones for height targeting and Worlds & Map Routing for path choices across three EA worlds. Low zones teach enemy patterns and reward safe resource gathering. Mid zones introduce elite fights with limb armor and status pressure. High zones gate boss encounters where Sever execution determines whether you extract powerful rewards or limp to the next camp with injuries.
Between fights you reach camp nodes to heal, swap skills from a pool of 100+ abilities, and attach 80+ relics that modify Break damage, Defend efficiency, or Karma drift. Learn camp drafts and Short Rest in Camp & Short Rest. Failed runs still feed Reincarnation meta progress — see Reincarnation & Meta once you finish your first attempt.
Choose your first hero
Early Access ships five heroes, each with distinct tempo:
- Swordsman — reliable Break chains and balanced Defend; forgiving first pick.
- Axeman — high limb damage at the cost of slower turns; strong when paired with sever-focused relics.
- Scholar (Researcher) — skill manipulation and debuffs; rewards players who read enemy intents.
- Thief — crit windows and action economy; fragile but explosive in Low zones.
- Taoist (Daoist) — Karma-sensitive kits that scale with moral choices during the run.
For deeper comparisons, read All Heroes and the Heroes Tier List. Swordsman or Scholar is recommended for learning Break timing without severe punishment.
Learn Break, Defend, and Sever basics
Combat is turn-based. Enemies telegraph attacks you can Defend against to reduce limb and body damage. Break actions deplete posture or armor segments on targeted limbs; once broken, a Sever attempt can remove the limb entirely for bonus loot and fight simplification. You do not need perfect execution in zone one, but you should practice intentional targeting rather than spamming basic strikes.
The full breakdown lives in Combat: Break & Defend. Bosses add multi-limb phases covered in Sever Boss Limbs.
First-run checklist
- Pick Swordsman or Scholar on difficulty default.
- Take any relic that increases Break damage or Defend retention — consult Relics & Builds for starter synergies.
- Clear two Low encounters without camping excessively; save heals for elite markers.
- At first camp, replace a basic skill with a limb-targeting option.
- Enter Mid zone only when health and at least one defensive cooldown are available.
- After death or victory, spend spirit resources in the Realm of Spirits before starting run two.
Use the interactive Run Checklist tool if you prefer ticking boxes between fights.
Demo vs full Early Access
Demo players hit content caps faster but still learn the Break loop. Follow the Demo Walkthrough for optimal demo routing. Upgrading to full Early Access preserves tutorial progress on the same Steam account and unlocks Hero Marks / Sigils tied to Karma — explained in Karma & Hero Sigils.
Where to go next
After one or two runs, prioritize Relics & Builds and Skills Tier List to avoid weak drafts. Track launch changes on Early Access Launch Notes and the Launch Sale (Aug 2026) page, and bookmark the Links Hub for official store and community URLs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Should I buy Early Access or play the demo first?
The demo is ideal for testing Break combat and hero feel. If you plan more than a few hours, Early Access unlocks all three worlds and full meta progression.
What is the easiest hero for a first run?
Swordsman offers the most forgiving Defend values and straightforward Break chains. Scholar is a strong alternative if you prefer debuffs and skill control.
How long does a typical run take?
Early runs often last 45–90 minutes depending on pathing and defeats. Speed improves once you know when to skip optional High zone nodes.
Is the game multiplayer?
No. The Severed Gods is single-player only during Early Access, focused on solo turn-based decision-making.
Where do I report bugs or balance feedback?
Use the official Discord linked from the Links Hub or post in Steam community discussions tied to App ID 3755930.
