The Severed Gods Reincarnation & Meta Progression
How failed runs still power your next attempt through the Realm of Spirits.
Roguelite strength in The Severed Gods comes as much from between-run progression as from in-run relic luck. Reincarnation sends fallen heroes into the Realm of Spirits, a persistent meta layer where spirit currency, unlock trees, and account-wide bonuses accumulate. This guide explains what carries over after death, how to spend resources efficiently in Early Access, and how meta ties into three worlds, Hero Sigils, and Karma systems.
What persists after a run ends
When a run ends — victory or defeat — you keep:
- Spirit currency earned from severs, bosses, and events
- Hero Marks progress toward sigils
- Realm of Spirits tree unlocks already purchased
- Discovered relic and skill entries in the archive (not the items themselves)
- Achievement and milestone flags that open new map nodes
You lose in-run relics, temporary skill swaps, limb injury state, and Karma accumulated during that attempt unless converted at specific shrines.
New players often restart without visiting the Realm — read Getting Started first, then return here after run one.
The Realm of Spirits hub
After each run, access the Realm of Spirits from the main menu. The hub displays spirit balance, available upgrade paths, and locked content tied to future Topebox updates on the Roadmap & EA Plan.
Upgrade categories typically include:
- Hero infrastructure — extra starting skills, improved base stats, sigil slots
- Camp quality — better draft options, healing discounts, reroll tokens
- World access — keys to world two and three gates inside runs
- Relic discovery — increased rarity weights for future attempts
- Quality-of-life — archive search, intent preview extensions
Spend spirit on unlocks that raise win rate before cosmetic or marginal bonuses.
Spirit currency sources
Spirit drops from:
- Successful Sever actions, scaling with boss tier
- High zone node completion and optional challenge rooms
- Karma events that reward merciful or ruthless resolutions
- End-of-run bonuses multiplied by depth reached
Failed runs still grant partial spirit based on zones cleared — dying in Mid zone beats resetting at Low. Boss sever greed vs safe extraction is a meta tradeoff covered in Sever Boss Limbs.
Reincarnation vs in-run healing
Reincarnation is narrative framing for meta resets, not a mid-run revive consumable. Do not confuse with camp healing or relic regeneration. Some Taoist skills reference “rebirth” keywords but only affect Karma — see Karma & Hero Sigils.
World unlock progression
Early Access ships three worlds, each gating harder relic pools and boss limb patterns:
- World one — default start, tutorial density, forgiving Break values
- World two — requires spirit unlock; limb rotation bosses
- World three — requires deeper tree investment; environmental hazard nodes
Demo installations may not expose full world gates — upgrade via Steam Early Access linked from Links Hub.
Hero Marks and sigil integration
Hero Marks earned during runs convert into Sigil fragments in the Realm. Sigils modify starting loadouts per hero — extra relic slot, Karma baseline shift, or Break bonuses. Detailed slot rules are in Hero Sigils.
Prioritize sigils for your main hero before spreading spirit across unused roster members unless chasing achievements.
Efficient Early Access spending order
- Unlock world two access node.
- Add first camp reroll charge.
- Purchase starting skill upgrade for main hero.
- Open primary sigil slot.
- Invest in relic rarity weighting after consistent Mid zone clears.
Adjust if you primarily play Thief or Scholar — consult Heroes Tier List for role-specific priorities.
Synergy with builds
Meta unlocks do not replace in-run Relics & Builds decisions. They widen options: more camp choices, stronger baselines, extra sever threshold on first boss. Players with max meta still lose to bad Defend habits — revisit Combat: Break & Defend when stuck.
Tracking progress across patches
Topebox may reset or refund spirit trees during major Early Access milestones — note changes in Early Access Launch and Demo Patch Notes when applicable.
Use the Run Checklist to confirm you spend spirit before starting the next attempt.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Do I lose all progress when I die?
In-run items and map progress reset, but spirit currency, Realm unlocks, and sigil progress persist on your account.
Can I respec Realm of Spirits upgrades?
Early Access offers limited respec tokens from milestone rewards. Plan spending using the priority list in this guide.
Is meta progression available in the demo?
Demo progress is separate and capped. Full Realm of Spirits requires the Early Access purchase.
Which unlock helps new players most?
Camp reroll charges and world two access typically raise win rates more than small stat bumps.
Does spirit carry between heroes?
Yes. Spirit is account-wide and funds unlocks that benefit all five Early Access heroes.
